200 students. 64 days. 3 gruelling tasks. $83,000 raised in the fight against cancer. 47 storyboards. 25 billboards. 25 marketing campaigns. 10 in-store promotion strategies. 35 presentations.

One team left standing. Two students remaining out of 200.

On March 31, student participants, sponsors, project staff, and supporters gathered at the beautiful and exotic Hamachi Steakhouse in Halifax’s picturesque Bishop’s Landing to celebrate the achievements of HRM’s creative best and brightest students in the 2010 Trumped Competition.

The first task of the competition saw 200 students create storyboards as part of the Canadian Cancer Society’s “Join the Fight” campaign. This task also challenged students to raise awareness of the disease while raising money for the society. Results of this task were truly overwhelming, with students raising an incredible $83,000 in three weeks. Fundraising strategies included polar bear dips, wine tastings and sucker sales, with Team JK Morgan prevailing. As winners of this task, JK Morgan is currently working along with Egg Films and a $120,000 budget to bring their story to life.

Tasks two witnessed the remaining 25 teams roll up their sleeves and get back to work, this time developing their vision for the 2010 Marketing Campaign for local food industry giants, the Hamachi Group of Restaurants. Teams had to be on their toes as they were forced to their creative limits in creating dynamic and inspired billboards for Hamachi. Another part of this task challenged students to sell tickets to dinners at Hamachi Group restaurants, during which time guests cast live votes to determine which teams would make up the Top Ten moving on to task three. Team 18 Litres won with their campaign centred on their tagline, “Why Should Spoons Have All the Fun?”

Task three in the 2010 Trumped Competition had students developing live, in-store product tastings for Molson Canada. Teams had to train Molson staff on their vision, come up with decorating concepts, as well as the design and implementation of their ideas in physical form, with a barebones budget of $300. Teams were tasked with delivering 20-minute presentations in the pressure-packed Molson Boardroom, sharing their experiences and implementation plans. In the end, Team JK Morgan again took first place, this time with their “Our Little Piece of Canada” concept.

In the end, Team JK Morgan took home the overall title of 2010 Trumped Champion. Their overall excellence and consistency in each of the three tasks couldn’t be denied, as they proved time and time again to be up to the challenges thrown their way. At night’s end, the coveted Trumped Briefcase made its way to Saint Mary’s University after spending the past year down the road at Dalhousie.

Seems like yesterday these students wandered into the first boardroom to find out what the 2010 Trumped Competition was all about. Entering with lofty aspirations and a belief in their abilities, teams worked to develop their business savvy while truly making a difference for task sponsors. Over the past three years the Trumped Competition has seen tomorrow’s business leaders truly leaving their mark on the city of Halifax, all the while helping local businesses and organizations achieve their goals. Last night’s festivities certainly captured the passion local students have for entrepreneurship and it was quite a thing to witness.

What a night. Great food, terrific atmosphere, an undercurrent of anticipation and excitement, and students breaking bread with local business leaders. All capped off with a deserving Champion being crowned. Not bad. Not bad at all… Anyone up for the 2011 Trumped Competition?
