St. Mary’s University Student Team Bridges the Gap Between Business Community & Students

St. Mary’s University has embarked on an community outreach project called Trumped to provide university students with outside of the classroom experience by bridging the gap between the business community and students. Students are given tasks that test what they’ve learned in the classroom and are given the opportunity to bring it to life in the real business world. Trumped provides the hands on experience that most university courses lack.

Student Fundraiser Takes Its Cue From The Donald

There was a fair bit of nail-biting going on at Saint Mary’s University last night. Students participating in a fundraising competition styled after The Apprentice TV show faced cuts in the “boardroom” last night. Forty-seven teams from Dalhousie, Saint Mary’s and Mount Saint Vincent universities were reduced to 24 last night. The charitable — but fiercely competitive — fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society gives the four-member teams three tasks. Only the top performing teams make the cut after each task is completed.

HALIFAX — She’s studying marketing in university, leading a major student business competition and running her own company. Leah Skerry has also recently been named Nova Scotia Student Entrepreneur of the Year by the national non-profit Advancing Canadian Entrepreneurship. But the 22-year-old Saint Mary’s University student, now owner of the Halifax marketing company EQ Media and a project leader for the Apprentice-style student competition Trumped, says she’s had plenty of help along the way. She credits a student loan program called Students in Business with giving both projects a major boost.

Fundraising Challenge Kicks Off business Competition

Julian Marentette has been crusading for 852 days to date, with one goal in mind:reducing the number of lives lost to cancer. It began when a co-worker at Music Stop was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Marentette, now the revenue development co-ordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society, felt the need to act. Since then, he has lost several family members to cancer and has had several more diagnosed with cancer, which only strengthens his resolve to fight back against the disease.

Business Students Get Chance to Win $10,000

Entrepreneurial-minded university students will test their business skills again this year in the annual Trumped competition. The Trumped Competition is a spin-off from the hit TV series The Apprentice. In it, teams of students compete in business-orientated tasks until one group is left standing. The 2009 Trumped Competition will include teams from Saint Mary's, Dalhousie and Mount Saint Vincent University........
